A rather nondescript small cranefly typical of winter crane flies, also known as "winter gnats". Body length about 10mm.
Other Trichoceridae species.
Detailed examination is necessary to identify to species level.
Various habitats.
Adults emerge from September onwards and are most active at night.
Larvae feed on cow pats.
Fairly frequent and widespread in Britain.
Status in Leicestershire and Rutland not known.
