Swift sightings

Or could we do a better job of recording them? More...

I'm sure you remember that we are putting more effort into recording Swifts this year as part of the Swift Survey 2018. I submitted a few records of Swift sightings recently and was intrigued to see the linear patterns Swifts fly in(!). Of course, this isn't real, it's the pattern of the major roads in the County overlaid on where the Swifts really are. This shows one of the major problems in wildlife recording - "recording effort", i.e. where the eyeballs are. This is the reason we are running our Mind The Gap campaign in 2018. We could definitely do a better job of recording where Swifts are in Leicestershire and Rutland though, so please, in the few remaining weeks that Swifts are with us, get out there, go off road and spot the Swifts!
